Water hammer is typically caused by high water pressure in the house. So, what causes high water pressure? Typically there are one of two reasons:
- The water pressure regulator has failed.
- You do not have a water pressure regulator and have straight city water pressure coming into your house. If this is the case, you can install a pressure regulator on your main water line and this should solve the problem
Due to the hilly nature of San Diego, water pressure can get built up from the head pressure and lead to excess pressure coming into the neighborhoods. This is why its especially important to install a water pressure regulator.
Other Causes Of Water Hammer
Sometimes there are other causes of water hammer besides high water pressure. It may be how the water pipes were installed that is causing air to get stuck in the line. If this is the case than a ‘loop’ or a piece of pipe 12” long with a cap facing upward to take the excess air out may solve the problem. It is best to talk to a professional plumber about this.
Quick closing valves can cause an issues as well. These can be found on toilets, washing machines and icemaker lines. If these fixtures are causing water hammer, and your water pressure is not too high, then we would recommend installing a water hammer arrestor on the fixture itself.
