What Causes Drains To Clog?
- Grease – This is most common in kitchen sinks, obviously. When grease is put down a drain it will not easily go down the drain pipe and out into the sewer. It tends to just sit there in the bottom of the drain pipe. Running a snake down the drain pipe usually does not unclog it either. We usually recommend to hydro jet the drain in this case. A good drain cleaner will be able to tell when to snake the drain and when to hydro jet the drain.
- Feminine products – We do not recommend flushing feminine products or wipes of any kind down the toilet. They do not dissolve like toilet paper does. Again, like grease they tend to just sit in the bottom of the drain pipe. This will lead to a build up and eventually a clog
- Hair – It is best to avoid putting hair down the drain. Often times when you shampoo your hair, some hair may come out. As opposed to letting it go down the drain, we recommend to put it on the wall while you take a shower. Then when you are done throw it in the trash
- Tree roots- This is common in the older homes in San Diego. There is not much you can do to avoid tree roots. They will grow where they want to grow. If you have an older home with older cast iron pipe, the tree roots can get into that pipe a lot easier than newer plastic pipe.
The best way to avoid clogged drains is preventative maintenance. If you avoid doing any of the things listed above, the chances of your drain clogging go way down. Of course your drain could still clog if your pipe is broken or partially collapsed under ground. When that happens, sometimes the only way to fix it is through excavation
If a drain clogs up, we do not recommend that you use any type of drain cleaners such as Drano or Liquid Plumber. These tend to have corrosive acids in them an they will destroy the pipe. Instead we recommend using a natural enzyme based product. These products are not strong enough to unclog a drain, however if you use them on a monthly basis, they will help to keep the drain clean and avoid calling a plumber
